PostSubject: Rear Wheel Steer.   Rear Wheel Steer. Icon_minitimeMay 18th 2013, 10:05 pm

Im working on makeing a mower rear wheel stear with front wheel drive. So I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how it should perform offroad or any ideas of some different mods that would be interesting on it that not many people have tried. Its a experimental project so I would realy just like some cool ideas.

I think you will be too top heavy and steering will be sketchy. Having operated a forklift multiple times, and even backing a vehicle up, it can be tricky.

U can expect a quick turning radius, same as a forklift.

It wouldn't be great at speed.

with independent wheel brakes it would be near zero turn

Either slow speed, or limit the steering angle, or both. Seems like i have seen a couple "backwards mowers" in the homemade implement section of mytractorforum.com They were literally small forklifts made out of lawn/garden tractors built to run backwards.

I plan on having it go about factory speed or slightly faster. Why do you think that it would be top heavy?

You definitely want to keep the speed down. Rear steer can be right hairy when you're moving at a good clip.

What in the world is going on with your front tires? Looks neat.

Ummm the tires were bad that came with the transmission.. So I made my own I am planning on putting sheet metal in them so they look like metal paddle tires.

I am going to add some more braces to the wheels so they won't bend as easily. With the rebar angled it helps to smooth the ride. If they weren't angled it would be really rough.

Well Ive been thinking about my project and I dont think that Im going to have it be a rear wheel steer any more because of saftey. With the paddle wheels out front Im worried about getting my feet in the wheels and I really dont feel like getting a broken foot. So I think that Im going to keep the wheels and just make a normal mower out of it.
