I've got one of those MTD 1844s (: real solid machines, front axles are a bit crappy though.
Awesome work though man (:

hey thanks and what i found was the hardest was the back because of the belt that's why i jacked up the red one because the belt is on the side but the green one has a five speed gear box and has a live axle so it has a chain

Yeah I've been thinking hard about many different designs, I have a few ideas on making a 4x4 machine as well but I need some part first. I got 1 old 2wd ATV with some CV joints, but I need some more mower parts as well. It makes things alot harder when you go up high. That's why I kept my Rally only lifted about 2" in the rear, original belt works fine even tho the pulleys are not lined up.

With a slow ration (stock front pulley, 4" rear) I have no trouble, I dropped the clutch and idler just a bit like 1/4" max. But with fast ratios like my racer they must be within 1/8" or the belt flies off. You can always drop your engine pulley and clutch/idler to match the lift if you have to. There's plenty of ways to do it tho I'm sure.

Ford Boi: Yeah thats the issue im having with the 'mild' mod MTD - kept eating belts, and come to find out the trans pulley sits higher then the variable pulley.

Ill fix that soon enough, cause its going to be alot faster.....

ragb chain drive, make sure every thing is lined up, reinforce stuff overkill is better than not enough, you end up with front axles ripping off and rear axles snapping, make the chain as short as possible if not use chain tensioners they will keep the chain from popping as easy, also make the rear axle adjustible

dropping tranny, use a shaft running off the input shaft and use a bearing up top right under the pulley to keep everything from moving and stable.

so far his green one is an axle eater it snaps axles in half all the time. spend the extra and get 1inch axles my big black one is a chain popper it would pop riding straght down the road. now i put a tensioner on it and beat it back in the mud and didnt pop once
hope this helps any more questions ask either of us

Yeah? there's a guy that we race with who had a similar machine with the vari-drive and it tore belts to shreds in seconds. Same thing, pulleys not in line. I'm a fan of a good ol' 6 spd with lined pulleys and plenty of keepers! Even after last weekend's races, me and my buddy's belts are fine, even from hard abuse drag racing and oval racing, taking off in 3rd ad 4th gear with full throttle.

Ford Boi: Yeah im doing my mild mod MTD on 'the cheep' - speed for minimum or no buck- LOL! Bascially been using stuff i have on hand, and as an experement im trying to see what abuse the stock transaxle will take and how fast i can get it going . The new smaller transaxle pulley ( 4") has an adapter welded onto it ( PO left on it) - i suppose if id thought about pulley allignment at the beginning- itd work- but unfortunately its permenently welded , id ruin the adapter getting it off the pulley.

Im going to make a stacked pulley to make up the height difference , delete the vari drive all together. with the 18.5 , it should screem.

I have a 6 speed teccy trans off my parts 94 murray ( that ill mount the shift on go setup as well) that might eventually find its way onto it - im still tinkering on my 96 MTD with the variable pulley and a 3 speed manual trans as well to see how that works - eventually ill yank the variable pulleys off - im just seeing what speed ill get initially.

Redzz02 - im saving a RAGB for my wheelhorse build - problem is i cant find any around, im not paying $500 for a bush hog to get one ( only thing Ive seen available) - im going to ask next time im at the local CC dealer n see what they run ( off a 50" plus mowing deck)- im not really in any hurry anyway. When i have some time ill try n build my own RAGB 1st.

My wheelhorse and wizard will get 1" axles .

Reading some lawntractor racing sites people will break 1" axles easy- they use 1 1/4" .

Jamiechisolm: belt didnt fall off- it shredded off becuase of the pulley misallignment. I didnt even see 10mph out of it. Just a tractor im tweeking on the cheep .

My modded murray with a 18.5 twin and 6 speed trans never dropped a belt, not even up to 40mph ( fast as i dared to take it- it still had half throttle and 3 gears left) .

I think one of my problems is the top sproket is so small.
What size do you have on yours?
I might just do the tensioner like you did.

Redzz02 : Yeah i have a peerless 700 trans - the lower input and side output type- depends if i get my 20HP onan twin horizontal going or if i get that 18HP twin verticle w/o a carb ( i have a scooter carb i want to try on it) going on wether ill use the 700 or a true RAGB or just a heavy duty clutch on the wheelhorse .

Ive done some research on racing tractors and drive setups - im really curious about the type on my 69 simplicity- verticle shaft engine and the trans pulley is verticle ( side input pulley) - the belts go to a center pulley, the back belt twists to go verticle from horizontal- might try that on one machine and see how that works/holds up to abuse.
