Oh, gett'n stoked!

It's funny, I stripped, chopped and cut up the tractor from it's original state and disassembled the donor motorcycle into a zillion pieces over a year ago. After a while, you start to wonder if it will every breath again. Well, this weekend it came one step closer to coming to life. I finished up the wiring, tested a few circuits, and turned the key. To my amazement, the starter spun and the spark plug I had laying on the cylinder head had spark. It's far from being drivable, but it looks like I can actually start this machine up and hear it run very, very soon. Hopefully I will have time next weekend to plum the fuel system and give it a whirl. Wish me luck.

All right, The DG(dirty girl)350 is alive!!!!

I plumbed the fuel system, hit the starter button, and I swear the engine did not get a chance to spin a second revolution before it fired right up. Sounds amazing! It's not too loud at idle, just a nice muffled rumble. But boy when you crack the throttle it really wakes up. Sounds bad to the bone.

Had my neigbor over and he was just giggling.

Not sure when I will have a chance to finish up the various systems to get it driveable, but at least I can start it up now. This gave me the motivation I needed to keep pressing on. And honestly, your comments/support help also. It's cool when other people "get it". Some folks just don't understand..................

Later,
Randy

I'm going to try and post a vid, but I'm not sure my work email will allow me to send such a large file.

oh yea i have one more question about these, does the coil just plug right into the connectors that come out the side case? and a shutoff should be one wire off the coil?

Typically, a Street bike motor will have more than one wire coming from the magneto (area). Manufacturers have done things in different ways over the years, so I'd suggest looking for a wiring schematic online if you can find one.

Find the correct ignition coil for the bike / motor and see what it needs to hook up. Usually a twin cylinder will use only one wire to a twin output coil. That wire gets grounded by the kill switch or button to stop the signal from the magneto / points from getting to the coil. Same as a mower setup.

On my particular set up, the hot wire from the battery goes first to the keyed ignition switch, then to a cut off switch that allows 12V to go through a single wire to the coils. That single wire splits into two once it gets to the dual coils. So with the cut off switch in the off position, neither coil can get 12v.

So the 12v going to the coils is also connected to the points?

Yes. On mine, there as a single connector that recieves the 12vdc from the cut off switch. That connector also has wires in it that leads to the coils and the points.

If you look on the "Honda Twins" website, they have schematics that show this wiring. This happens to be for a CL or CB350, but I believe all the old twin cylinders are pretty much wired the same.

That is one heck of a machine. I got a 1972 Montgomery Ward 4 I will speed 15 and it's got the exact body as that one. Yours must have been made by Gilson like mine.
