my gears are turning..... literally!
i think i might copy redlinemotorsportts and make an engine driven winch after that excapade.. i have an extra front PTO shaft, and the clutch still works for the PTO. i can mount to the tubes for the frame and the holes for a front attachment. Then it would be a matter of getting a tranny and building a spool... OH, and figuring out how to fit all this schmeel on the front.. FFFFFFFFFS

Oh wait. It's a 74 FOOT, (74'), tractor. So your wheels are easily 40 feet tall, and those holes are probably more like THIRTY feet deep!!

so, ive got it figured out how im going to do this winch. im trying to do as little fabrication, and as little work as possible. as well as minimizing the chance for something to go wrong. i was thinking about running it direct drive off the front PTO.

first, a parts list-
-Peerless 700
-misc metal
-several pillow-block bearings
-4 hitch pins
-chain and sprocket
-1 inch keyed axle shaft or pipe
-roller fairlead
-LOTS of cable

-----------------------------
now, like i said, i was thinking of running the 700 directly to the PTO, using a lovejoy coupler. i think it may be too fast though. after all, the PTO IS designed to run a mower deck, tiller or snowblower. If i change the pullys and gear it down a bit, that may work. My aim for this is to make it all quick-attach and removeable with only a few pins. If i use the lovejoy, that will allow it to come apart rather easily. I would build a 'cage' for the tranny and spool to sit in, which would be the part that i would take off when i needed to.

I am thinking i would bolt to the frame, and come out about 10 inches with about 3/8 plate steel, and weld on a piece of pipe for the quick-attach, so i could just slip a pin in. i would do the same for the 'cage'. on my front axle, there is 2 tabs, where one could mount a snowblower or dozer blade, i was going to use them as my 2nd attachment point.

i would take 2 pillow blocks, mount them to the cage, and run a chunk of 1 inch keyed axle shaft in-between, and weld washers on it, to create a spool. i would put a sprocket on each side, and do a chain drive to the 700. i would run 2 chains since the tranny i am buying is a dual output.

reading back through this, i came up with a solution to my gearing issue. i could change it through the sprockets!
i also realized a problem. my front axle pivots. the frame dosent. SO- if i use the tabs on it, i would have to figure out a way to block up the axle so it wont move. i could probably do that with a grade 8 bolt on each side.

let me know what yall think! did i miss anything? am i overthinking it? any tips will be appreciated

don't you already have a 700 and axle from that snowblower that wouldn't start?

The snow blower axle would be very suitable for a spool drum/jackshaft. Heres a pic i snapped of a ariens, has bearings and a 3/4 solid axle thru and thru, Thats what i'd use if id make another pto winch.

still havent gotten the winch or anything. still waiting to get paid for the last 3 weeks of landscaping. my boss is pulling his usual BS again. expecting me to work me ass off and not get paid for it.. this may be the summer i go tell him to stuff it, and start off on my own......

anyway, not going to be done in 18 days, sadly.. too much going on right now. we're in the process of buying a house, and as previously mentioned- i'm f'en broke.... i still plan on doing all that work to it. paint, front tires, and yes.. a *gulp* PTO powered winch..  Twisted Evil

its just going to take a while, but it WILL happen. before i go building anything, im going to try to get in touch with Lawren and see if he is still willing to ship me that Kohler, so that way i have a spare engine. I fear this tecumseh is not long for this world

Just get some old half empty paint cans opened up and splash it on there from 10 feet away. Be sure to use at least 10 different colors.
