Is there different thickness ratings for synthetic? what kind should i get?

hey guys, been a while since ive posted something but i was hoping one of you could help me out. |m looking to get rid of my shitty lawnmower oil because when it gets cold, it can start in the cold worth sh*t! Im looking to spend some money and get some synthetic oil for my tractor. Is there different thickness ratings for synthetic? what kind should i get?

i wanted to use Royal purple in my mod murray's 18.5 twin, cause it always cranked over hard- its $8 a quart.

Any weight should work - ive ran 10w30 - 10w40, 5w20, 5w30 and sae30 in all my tractors.

Synthetic will be expensive - over $5 a quart, another bad thing about it is it can cause seals to leak that havent leaked before.

New motor yes or a completely rebuilt motor . Do not put synthetic oil in a motor that has used regular oil all its life! Synthetic oil eats away at seals that been exposed to regular oil all its life. I should know i detonated a lawnmower and a regular car motor by doing this. it eats at the seals and the motor will start burning oil.

Actually the proper way to run synthetic is on a new motor after its been properly broken in ( otherwise rings n berings wont wear in correctly) - in a vehicle its like a 1000 miles or so. I dumped a quart of royal purple in my ancient 11HP briggs after i nearly seized it- it hasnt leaked out yet.

Most synthetic is mineral based - the seals tend to recede a bit and it leaks out.

Id still just run a thin 5w20 - 5w30 ( ive run nearly every weight oil in my tractors - never had an issue).

i just put synthetic in my engine its around a 2001 2002. it had regular oil in it before. do you think i will have any problems?

Id keep an eye on it for any leaks - and check the oil regular. Most people settle on a synthetic blend- not quite as expensive as full synthetic.

I was thinking of using a full synthetic oil in my 99 f150 when it was new - couldnt justify the cost tho- even tho itd raise the oil changes to 5000 miles.

Our 2007 KIA runs a full synthetic oil- its like $40 for an oil change. To me it looks dirtier then the oil in my truck- supposedly thats normal.

I've been running full synthetic in my 07 Yaris since after the first oil change, so 10k. I would have went with synthetic at the first change but was on vacation and didn't justify the cost when having it done for me. Ever since I do it at home and use the walmart brand, roughly $20+my labor which is still cheaper than getting it done with the cheapest regular oil you can. This car is said to go 5k between changes and the oil still looks pretty good coming out every time, no leaks. Like many have stated though, I wouldn't bother in an older engine.

My kia is still under warranty - plus we have an extended warranty also from kia - so we have to have all our work done there to comply with the warranty.
