The 5/8" notched is too thick around some of the pulleys and belt retainers. Will a 1/2" belt be okay to use or will it be too big when it drops lower into the pulleys?

There is a difference, and i couldnt tell you what it is, but i know its by a few inches. If you have/ are going to a tractor supply, most have the belt sizers, you dont even need a belt if they have one, just set the scale up to 90" for a 5/8 belt, and then just read what they have call for a 1/2" belt.

well, they had one. Turns out what I had was a B90=5L930=93" not 90". It said I need a 4L920 or 92" 1/2" belt.

Good to see it work out for you. i had to get a belt and they were out of the 1/2" size and i almost bought a 5/8" of the same size, that wouldnt of worked. re measured, and got the correct 5/8 belt.
