Nice collection you got there! Yeah those FNR trans are not suitable for mudding or offroading. Anything above light use knackers them.

Is that craftsman 6 speeds with 3 high gears and 3 low gears and an h pattern shifter?
craftsmans are typically good. if it has an inline shifter it is likely a peerless 820 if it is a GT(garden tractor, these usually have 5 lug rims on the back)

and ive heard good things and bad things about the intek ohv v twins. what all engines do you have laying around or have access too?
Some great engines (in my opinion, im pretty biased toward briggs&stratton lol)
flathead single cylinder briggs engines, especially older ones. they tend to be very sturdy. CQ runs two of them and i know most guys on here have run one at some point. they are simple, moddable, and have a very wide range of available parts
ohv single cylinder briggs- just a more modern version of the flathead briggs. the one i have i never had problems with. solid engine
briggs vanguard- the commercial line of v twin and single cylinder engines from briggs. i have one from the 90s. it has the hydraulic valve train and all that jazz. complicated, but i know they are capable of 5000 rpm stock.
there are many more, but that is just a small list. im sure someone has more to add to it lol

My first post - Page 2 20161227

this cub was one of our first mud mowers but the hydro overheats and it became a parts tractor (rip)
My first post - Page 2 20161230

this is a friend of mines blue wheel-horse he bought it this way put tire chains on it and that is as far as we got. (runs and smokes bad)
My first post - Page 2 20161231

this is my dads wheel-horse that he got for free we think it has a busted rod (the engine spins over by hand and has no compresion) but it may acquire a snowmobile engine (we have a 340 but its still a good sled)
My first post - Page 2 20161228

this is my friends ranch king its needs some work as you can see by the photo

You certainly have plenty of projects! That DieHard Craftsman GT should have a 633 trans in there and a twisted belt setup.

That mini tractor is cute. The engine that's on it is a 2hp Briggs.

Those FNRs are good for speed, but wont take much hammering. The axle housings will crack if you dump the clutch or get stuck and the tires grab. I had one geared up to 20 mph and it held up pretty good. It would pull the front wheels at 10mph just by moving the stick on the shift on the go. They accelerate good since you dont have to clutch to change gears.

the only thing i dont like is the variable speed with the two belts it gets locked up in mud or jams and wont go at full speed. my black mtd (Mudster is what im going to call it becouss of the monster energy stickers) has variable speed and the sliding pullys gets locked up and only gose half speed.

i have an idea but i dont know if it would work. i would like to replace the variable speed pully

example
My first post - Page 2 917-0810

and replace it with two normal pullys. that i know will work but, dose that mean that instead of just the drive and transaxle pullys  i will have two more pullys to swap and gear even faster and still keep the power. i dont know if im making sense im kinda confusing myself. will it make any diference if i had four pullys to swap instead of just two is what i think im asking. lol My first post - Page 2 2429134702 My first post - Page 2 2429134702 My first post - Page 2 2429134702

You could use those pulleys for a swap instead of trans or engine pulley swap, but you will need to make the pivot solid and fab up a new clutch.

Yes, and no. While doing that would give you the equivalent of a jackshaft and therefore offer a another point of gearing, you will ultimately be able to go no faster or have no more power, than if you just had a standard pulley setup. Speed and torque are finite. You cannot add more than you have available to you.

To make matters arguably worse, by doing this on an MTD, you lose ALL semblance of multiple "gears". You'll have afixed ratio. Picture putting your car in 5th gear, and trying to take off from a standstill. Ugly. If you're going to eliminate the variator, you're honestly best to replace that single speed trans with a multi-gear unit.

Keep the variable speed pulley. They can be a PITA to get the belt sizes just right on a pulley swap, but they are a good set up. I plan on using that on the slingshot build. It is basically a manually adjusted CVT and a damn cheap way to do it. You need to keep the needle bearings clean and greased on the slider. Rust on the pulleys will eat up belts pretty quick too.

If you only want a single speed, skip the jackshaft in the middle and go straight to the FNR with the belt

Will eat belts, like a 3" height difference.
