I know there is a lot of factors involved but what is the average speed increase you would get by replacing the pulley on the front by one inch?.

On my craftsman, I originally went up about 2 inches with a 5" or so electric clutch. I got about 10mph.

A more accurate way would be to figure out your gear ratios and work everything out, lol

Yea your right, I'm hoping to get the same speed out of fourth that I am getting out of fifth now. I would do the rear swap but I don't want to keep as much toque as I can. I have a blade I pull behind it every now and then.

And I would like to lower the rpms so its not so noisy around the house and still get up and go

Not sure which transaxle you have, I have an MST206. I reduced my rear pulley from I think 8 inches down to 6. I still had a stout 1st and 2nd gear for tugging and dragging without getting on it. It had a lot of pulling power at that time plus I got a speed increase easily to 15. I was pulling trees with it at that time. I was running 4 inch motor then as well.

I have since reconfigured my front to 6 and my rear to 5. I think I still have enough grunt in 1st and 2nd to do some around the house duties, then a lot of speed for fun in the top end.

Edit: I do have a 17hp Twin Opposed engine, so that helps with the power. Not sure your engine. Another thing, by increasing your engine pulley size and not the rear, you do increase your belt traction. Just don't forget to have some sort of belt guide as well or your belt will be grabby or not properly disengage.

Thanks for the advice, its like a 92 murray 12 horse. I have no idea what rear end is in it. Is looks like it I change the rear pulley I might have clutch issues. I think the clutch is pretty much on the rear axle.

Gotcha! I had to build a new clutch for mine.

I looked at it again at lunch and its a long ways back to the clutch and transmission. I was thinking I could put a step pulley on the front. Since the transmission is so far back I don't think the alignment would be a issues and the clutch has such a far travel I don't think that would be an issue either. I could put the belt on the top pulley or the lower one depending on what I am doing? What do you think?
