Hey guys, so this is "the guest mower" that I've been doing some work to to get it ready for the offroad trip...

Murray Stamped Frame P1100627

A stamped frame murray I got for free when I got the Craps-man. It had a rusted deck, and looked like it would never run again.

Murray Stamped Frame P1080613

After a few months of tinkering, turned out it needed a carb, a coil, a starter, a little electrical work, and some new front wheels. She's already undergone one motor swap, and now it has the awesome 14.5HP Briggs on it. I think a Peerles 930, which I don't like. It wont even pop a wheelie.

Anyway, She's never run more than half way decent. She spits, farts, and misses every once in a while, so it probably needs a new carb. (I mean it did come of the Craps-man so of course it needs a new carb) It ain't very fast, and the pulley setup I was using just plain isn't gonna work. So, $40 later, I got 2 pulleys from TSC and hope I have a spare belt (I'll be putting them on sometime this week I hope). And I need to cut the turfs. Plus, the stupidness of how it was built causes the steering to lock up when your on an angle, so I need to cut what's getting in the way of the one rod setup out.

Anyway, it never got it's own thread yet because it sits in the shed most the time. So after the mudding trip, back to the shed she goes.

Does that have one of those hoods that hinges at the back like an automotive deal? I always thought that was sorta neat.

I like the looks of it. But I just like Widebodys better.

So, the steering problem... When the axle is articulated all the way up on the left side, it won't steer left because the white circle hits the blue circle in the butt, so I took the grinder to it.

Murray Stamped Frame P1110233

Got the pulley swap done. She goes pretty darn good. I'd say at least 15MPH. Also got the rear tires cut up and ready for mud. I'll get pics tomorrow. Ordered a new carb too.

Well, I've made plenty of progress this week! Got the carb installed, used gasket maker to hold the hood screws in, got a hood pin with a "nutish" screw thingy on it (forget what it's called), deep water tested it (should've gone deeper), and found out that it's just like FF's Murray, goes really really fast into the mud, and then just stops and spins LOL!

Murray Stamped Frame P1110341
Murray Stamped Frame P1110343

Now I need to fix the parking brake, and the belt falls off every time you go down a steep hill or you press the clutch/brake. And, something that I could really care less about, but it knocks under a load. It's already had one motor swap, so if worse ever comes to worst, than I don't see any harm in a V-Twin... Shocked.  Almost ready!

Okay so if you're keeping up with the Mountain Murray's thread, then you know I had used this ones tires on it. Anyway, now that the MM has permanent wheels, this one got it's tires back. And it got a beat up trashed battery that might stay in it. So now that both my widebodys are not useable, I'm resorting to this. I must admit I like the speed a whole lot better than my red widebody. I still need to replace this ones belt because it falls off every time you hit your brakes

So, I've been using it a lot lately. Only thing was a bad carb flood, had to go through everything to get it running again. Anyway, I decided to get this build finished up. Tomorrow I gotta make belt guides to keep the belt from falling off, and I need to fix the parking brake... She could probably use a new head gasket and belt soon too. But today, I added headlights and taillights, a seat spring (hopefully I can get another one for the other side), and Duct Tape to keep the + terminal of the battery from touching metal and shorting...

Duct Tape (permanent I think...)

And headlights... Used the MM's.

One thing I like about the headlights... They glow back... It's absolutely AWESOME in the night!

It went from innocent fun, to frustrating to look at. The belt is done for, the seat spring didn't work out, the belt guides are useless, even managed to run it into a support beam at the shop and caused harm to the light lenses...

Anyway, I now need to re-think the drive system because the belt burns on literally everything it can touch, not to mention how much it falls off, get a new belt, new oil and head gasket, label the on/off switch for the headlights, maybe I will lock the transaxle, and it really needs front and rear mud flaps. But I want this project done and out of my way so Ima do what I have to get it done.

What pulleys/mods are you running compared to stock drive setup?

Well, lets see, a deck drive pulley from something in the front, and a 5" in the rear. That's my ratio... My clutch is stock besides adjusting it some, and replacing the plastic pulley with a steel TSC one, so it's pretty much the same as your clutch. But, all the pulleys are off. Here's a drawing of what I mean by off...

Sorry for the strange background...
Murray Stamped Frame 20170610

So, as you can see, the pulleys are off, causing the belt to burn on all sorts of stuff... I also think this is the reason for the belt getting thrown. For one, the belt is burning on the brake pedal itself, 2nd, it burns on the shifter rod (the part that sticks out of the trans.)... But all pulley swapped murrays do. The reason I think the belt is off on the rear is because the C-clip broke (the one that holds the pulley from rubbing on the casing. I also saw sparks coming from that area when I watched a video of me popping wheelies). As for the front... I don't know what to do there... I'll try to get some pics of the actual drive line, I'll also upload the wheelie video so you can see the sparks. But the other issue, is that whenever you press the clutch, the belt loosens so much, it almost falls off. I'll try and get a video of that too.

Welp, I remembered that the old JD deck had some good idler pulleys on it, so tomorrow, those will be transfered to the stamped frame. The head gasket and oil change is also not happening now, and the belt was too small by far. So, whenever I get the right belt, and get some rear mud flaps, and maybe throw some 16 inch front wheels on it, it'll be complete. In case you haven't watched the video, here's the front mud flaps...

Well, got a belt that fits! No way to stop when in gear except to either throw it in neutral or turn the key off, but it drives! Here's a video of me driving it...

video

I also busted out the old amp meter so I could use it as a place to clamp my I-pod to since I added my Murray's old music system to it...

Murray Stamped Frame P1110626

New "Radio"

And since I got tired of busting up the hood, I added a brush guard. it's the old frame to one of that I used have...

Murray Stamped Frame P1110625

I'm also gonna add a cargo area in between the seat and steering column by putting a Craftsman battery box there...

Murray Stamped Frame P1110624

And I put my Murray's battery box in because I got tired of the battery flopping around in there and slicing wires...

Murray Stamped Frame P1110627

Okay, got a cutting wheel for the angle grinder, so now I can make the cuts for the cargo box! I mounted it by drilling three holes where the wires would go, and just zip tied it in...

Murray Stamped Frame P1110635

Must say it fits quite nicely...
Murray Stamped Frame P1110634

Not much in it right now, buts stuff's comin'!
Murray Stamped Frame P1110633

And since we were headed to the fab shop anyway, I had them weld the mud flap bolts in...
Murray Stamped Frame P1110637

And this is the back light that the headlights give in the night.... It's pretty awesome!

Murray Stamped Frame P1110636

Now I just need some rear mud flaps and I can officially call this one complete!

Well, been working on this since Sunday afternoon... School takes up most of my time, but I'll have it finished tonight!

So as you know the Craps-man is dead, so the body is now going to this... That's right, a body swap! It went from this:

Murray Stamped Frame P1110650

To this:
Murray Stamped Frame P1110710

So after cutting this out:
Murray Stamped Frame P1110653

I thought it'd look pretty good. It's not as high as it will really be in these pics, but it looks meant to be:
Murray Stamped Frame P1110652
Murray Stamped Frame P1110651

Then the next day (yesterday), after removing the floorboards, I cut all those tabs out of the shifter's way:
Murray Stamped Frame P1110654
Murray Stamped Frame P1110711

Then I cut a space for the clutch pedal:

And then, after cutting the MO area out of the body and a little too much of it, I could fit the battery and the body in place permanently. I do wish there was more meat in the back, but it fits like it was made for it:

The front is mounted, but I'm still working on the rear, the seat is gonna give me some trouble if the shifter doesn't.
