Likely. It will have a weird ass variable drive pulley setup with a worn out Forward, neutral, reverse transaxle

In this instance the vari drive sucks. The transaxles are good though, you just dont have any extra internal gear ratios.

An F-N-R would work best with a Centrifugal clutch, or a sled style CVT

Its an MTD - good thing about MTD's is theres plenty of room inside the chassis to mount another trans, the bad thing is the chassis is in two pieces ( front and back half) and it bolts together - if it were welded together and braced, itll be a good strong chassis.

The variable drive gets alot of flack, it has its issues sometimes, but it is a decent drivetrain , specially for simply mowing.

Im going to use a 2003 bolens chassis for the base of my rat rod tractor, itll be strengthened to handle a 18HP twin, straight rear axle and lowered stance.

Why is it everyone hates the variable speed axles? I have one on my mud mower and it works just fine.

Experience. I hated mine, always burnt up my belt and slipped when I hit water.

Never tried to offroad one, but I like my geared transmissions a lot so no need to experiment Wink

Okay so the problems with this set-up is that after constant use in the same gear the clutch will become worn in that spot and will slip (I've lost 7 and 6 on mine so far and i got it last summer, also another problem is the slipping once it hits water, the reason for this is the spring on the clutch isn't strong enough to keep ample tension on the belts, and it isn't really feasible to put tensioner pulleys on it because of the spring also. I put a stock murray deck pulley on the front of mine and left the stock 9 in on the back and it pretty much bypassed the clutch and it didn't slip all the way until it shredded the old rotten belt on the back, speaking of which does anyone know the dimensions of the rear belt? Laughing

I redid my mtd. Took out the vari-drive. Put one inch square on top of the transaxle. Between the chassis and transaxle. Have a double pulley clutch. Now I run a full belt. Haven't had and problems
