i have a 17.5hp ohv Tecumseh and it needs a carb... or float bowl, so i kinda jury rigged my 11hp carb on there and ran decent, so i was wondering if any of the Briggs carbs have the same mounting holes as the Tecumseh? i only had one bolt in the carb snd was holding it on with my hand lol to get a new tecumseh carb is anywhere from $45 to $150 for this thing, so i'm trying to be cheap

Two problems- mounting flange, and governor. If the flange works out, that's great, but it doesn't address the governor link, which is pretty much guaranteed not to match up. If the engine will be ungoverned, then it doesn't matter.

The flange is pretty easy to deal with. Holes can be redrilled, adapter flanges can be made, etc.

Don't kid yourself. It might have seemed like it was running okay with one bolt and your hand holding it on- apply a load to it, and then the truth comes out. You should at least select a carb from a similar engine (like a 15-18hp Briggs for example as the fuel and air demands will be similar. To big a carb is just as bad as too small. Too big will actually cause a vacuum loss and be lean no matter what you do (even though you would THINK that a too-big carb would run rich).

yeah that's what i was thinking, i was hoping to find someone who would sell me there carb cheap from a briggs, seeing as these plactic floatbowls have tons of problems

I hear ya. I've got a generator that's just giving me fits with the carb. I liked the old Tec carbs, but some of the newer series are just awful.

so i guess i could pay $25 for a float bowl or if i could get a 17hp Briggs carb i would go ahead and build a whole new intake for it, unless it would fit with the stock intake, and for the linkage that doesn't work anyway so i'll have to build new ones

on my bolens my carb is an old walbro LME. brass float, steel bowl. the old bowl used to be brass with a drain, but over the years it got a pinhole in it

i think i'll just end up forking out the $55 for the carb, hope it doesn't suck... alot of people said the aftermarket carbs don't work properly, i'm not sure if that's user error or poor quality? if you don't tune your carb an use fresh/clean gas it's not going to work properly...

Generally, that's true. But I can tell you this- I am no stranger to carbs, and this dang HM100 is driving me nuts. I did a bunch of research, and it seems they are very prone to the problem I am having. All I can say is try!

Tecumseh = carburetor troubles. unless you only run antifreezed stabilized high-test gasoline. I've been lucky with my HM80 on the snowblower, prolly cause I run a pleated paper fuel filter, and always use stabilized gas.
