PostSubject: GOLF CART AXLE   GOLF CART AXLE Icon_minitimeDecember 2nd 2013, 8:31 pm

Just scored a golf cart rear axle. Anybody know anything about them? Looks as stout if not more then my transaxle with 1" shafts and the brakes on it are monstrous compared to tractor brakes. Only problem is it is just an axle and diff. No forward, neutral, reverse.
Any ideas? Lets brainstorm.

Its just a straight axle with a diff. Use a sprocket to a torque converter off a horizontal. Some pillow blocks and done.

Check the gear redux ratio. Could be 12:1 all the way down to 20:1. If it were me, I would examine using a 700 tranny with it. I foolishly got rid of one a few years ago thinking I was never going to use it. I'm still kicking myself...

It looks like a transaxle. Its all in a housing. Including axleshafts. But instead of a pully on top it looks like a right angle gearbox and the input is out the front of that. Looks like a mini rockwell (deuce and a half army truck) axle.
I dont have any horizontal motors so I would eather have to go with docs 700 idea (though I dont have one of those eather) or turn the housing on its side and find a way to make that work.

Turn the axle were the input is on top lol, but you'd only have a foward from the engine lol, no neutral or anything

Im likin the peerless 700 idea so far. I have no experience with them though. Would they take an 18hp engine 23" super lugs and some hard beatin on it?
I was also thinkin I could use it for a mini jeep build I wanna do by turning it on its side like you said and usin a centrifugal clutch and doin a rear mounted engine.

With the 700 u need a straight axle so the only stress on itself is wear the chain will stress the output shaft from the torque of the big tires, but other then that it doesn't have stress on like the axle shafts as a normal mower tranny does so I don't see why it wouldn't be able to handle that lol maybe even 25s

I think the 700 is up to the task. Mount it solidly, race prep it, and away you go.

Its probably out of an early EZGO, G-1 yamaha or maybe a Harley 3 wheel cart. All of those carts used 2 stroke engines that ran either direction negating the need for a direction lever inside the trans. In other words, if used with a 4 stroke you will not have reverse. they along with all golf cart transaxles are pretty tough.

They went to a geared transaxle in the later Marathons when EZGO started with the twin cylinder. Thats a great transaxle you have there.

if its out of a cushman, then it was probably an electric maintenance cart. not sure who their vendor was. cushman also made some durable stuff. im pretty sure taylor-dunn used a 8 or 9 inch ford rear. only adding that because i remember something being said about it looking like a rockwell.
