Make your own muffler!

There's gotta be a hundred ways to skin that cat. I am running a home made muffler on MULE, and had that very same one on my old gokart before. Sweet and easy to build. I'm gonna fab another one soon, I'll make a vid this time, because I caught hell from people for not making a vid last time...

I think I would pass on making all those holes for the core. The rest doesn't look so bad.

Not really a muffler anymore with a straight pipe through it. - Well some offcourse but its more for power.

If you want to make a muffler thats actually quiet you block the pipe, say mid-way. Then drill holes on each end. The small holes diameter should together be the big pipes diameter. on each end. - then fill it with a suited dampening wool.

thanks for the idea I'm gonna try something like that and take my stock muffler and try stuffing the pipe with steel wool its just a 4" pipe coming out of the block with a stock muffler on it

Takes all the fun out of finding a cheap used glass pack at a swap meet. Think he'll eventually paint it with high heat red?

Here's some old pictures of a muffler I welded up a while back. I was trying to do it with a stick welder and some thin rods before I had a wire feed job, so the welds didn't come out too good. One inlet, two outlets.

Very similar to what I did. I used a length of pipe as the muffler's "core". At the half mark, I used my grinder to cut a slot about 3/4 through the pipe, and inserted a slug made out of steel sheet (16ga I believe) and welded it in, creating a stop. Then, instead of drilling a zillion holes, I used my grinder again. I cut a dozen or so slots along the pipe, maybe 1/4 of the way thru the pipe, all the way along (both sides of the stop, spaced evenly along the pipe. I flipped the pipe over and repeated, so that I had slots down both sides- not that a pipe has "sides", but you get the idea.

From there, it was a simple matter of welding it into the canister I chose. I did not use any kind of damping material. I might on the next one.
