I have a 1966 sears custom 600 and it has the original front tires. They are starting to dry rot and I was wondering if there is a fix for it. I have heard that you can just put an innertube in it.

Armor all will stop it from dry rotting but won't fix it.

Armor all is the number one killer of tires do not armor all your tires.

If you want to keep the originals you can try an inner tube but the tires are still going to drive out there is no way to stop it or fix it

If they are original, they should have tubes in them now I would think. Some cracking won't really bother anything though as long as they aren't falling apart. Usually pretty tough to get them on or off the rim if they're old because of how stiff they are. Best to leave them on if you want to run them.

I have heard of people using blacktop and roof sealant (use in caulk gun). Does that work for coesmetics outside the tires?

Maybe, never heard of that really. I would think it would look worse just because of all the excess on the parts that aren't cracked. Some tire shine might make them look a little better. I like the foaming kind myself. Guy in the world's fastest indian movie used black shoe polish to fill in dry rot cracks and sneak through tech inspection.

Going to be tough to hide the cracks but that stuff could work. But that is hiding not fixing.

They sell tire paint, put it on thickight work to hide it

That's pretty bad if it's bulging out. Will rip and the tube will push through. Time to replace I think.

I had some old ones on the sears when I started messing around with it and they were cracked but I didn't think they were so bad. Put some air in them just so I could roll it around and a day or two later the tube pushed through a huge rip in the side....lol.

I'm not sure whether they're bulging out or not, I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow morning

Run them till they explode or a couple of trailer tires are probably around $30 each. If the rims are in good shape you can just go tubeless. Get a couple of tubeless valve stems. Pretty sure that's what I did with my sears.

yeah I saw a front tire on a Jacobson gt that we were pushing out of the blackberry vines and the front tire suddenly exploded. it was tubed, so the tube poped out of the tire in one spot, it was really bumpy after that... lol the tube is still holding air, but the tire is defenately shot. I would put good strong tape on it and run it till you find new tires.

I think that tire still has a long way to go before it ever comes apart.

yeah I would say so. or you can leave it and fix it when it bursts. When they do go south, buy some of those tri-rib front tires- the style they use on real tractors for front tires. You can get them for an 8" rim.

look online, ebay, or look up garden tractor tires on google and there will be a lot of options to choose from.
