PostSubject: Question???   Question??? Icon_minitimeFebruary 23rd 2018, 10:15 am

So i am building an off road mower. And i would like several opinions on how to use a horizontal shaft engine on a lawn tractor. Im hoping to use a 212 predator. Im open to making a simple mule drive but i need to know how to do that. And i am hoping that someone comes up with another way of doing it.

Get a transmission from a wheel horse or a Sears with a horizontal input shaft or get a centrifugal clutch or torque converter from a go cart and chain drive that to a live axle.

But the thing is I want to keep the all wheel steering. I mean I guess I could just keep the trans and if I ever wanted to put it back on I could.

It’s a goner. And it would be better cause I would need a battery if I kept using that engine and with the predator I would only need the pull start that comes with it. And every time my friend fixed it something would break on the engine.

Could have a RAGB somewhere in the mix, but then you have to find one, mount it, get two belts, and possibly make a custom clutch. Probably be much simpler to just stick with a vertical shaft engine, haha.

Another thought is to figure out what it would take to fix the vertical shaft engines you have. There's lot of guys on here that can help you with that. Smile

I agree. Nothings a goner unless there's a hole in the block or something along those lines. If there is a hole in the block, little bit of JB Weld and done!!! Question??? 2731072446 No just kidding, don't do that lol.

Agreed, like I said it'd probably be simpler to just stick with a vertical shaft engine. What exactly is wrong with the Kohler?

Oh I thought maybe he found out something else was wrong or something. Yeah if it's still that same issue I'd make sure the fuel line/filter wasn't clogged, and give the carburetor a good cleaning. Then hopefully it'll be good to go!

I had a mini bike with a sheet metal patch riveted over a hole in the side of the block. The motor ran good, but the patch did leak oil so I had to top it off frequently. One day I was riding it and the motor threw another rod through the sheet metal patch!

I patched the side case of a 5hp briggs Flathead with jb weld. Depending where the hole is, some strategic JB weld shouldnt be a problem.

Carl, you just need some ultra black on that patch and re-rivet. Good as new! lol!
