Hello,
The last few years i worked on a gokart, that has a honda gcv 135 (vertical shaft) engine and a peerless 700 transmission (3 forward, 1neutral, 1reverse). The frame is made from one of these pedal gokarts that are pretty popular in germany, and the drive train is made out of Lawnmower/ Lawntractor Parts.
Heres a picture of it:

I also built a clutch for it. (belt clutch) The Clutch engages when i press down on the clutch pedal, when i let off of it, the clutch disengages.
here's a Picture of it so you know what im talking about:

As you all can probably guess, the clutch worked for a bit of time, then broke down again and again and again...
It really likes to DESTROY belts... My question now is:
How can i make thhis clutch setup last?
My idea was to get a gokart centrifuial clutch thats has a belt pulley instead of a sprocket and put it on the engine, then connect the belt to the Peerless 700 input pulley, so i only run a centrifuigal clutch and a tight belt. Is this a good idea? Another Problem would be that i can only get centrifuigal clutches for 19, 20, 20.02 and 25mm shaft sizes, the honda gcv 135 shaft is 22.2 mm thick so i would need to grind it down with an angle grinder a bit (2.2mm would need to be gone). What ideas do you guys have for a clutch setup like this? Thanks for your awnsers ! Honda vertical shaft kart with peerless 700. 1f600

The black arm'd pully the clutch?
Maybe elimination of the silver armed pulley and move the clutch further from the trans pulley if you can?

Maybe an engine belt guide(s).

@MightyRaze
no, the black pulley is a support to keep the belt a bit further out. The silver one at the top is the Transmission input pulley. The one on the bottom is the engine pulley. The silver/grey one is the one that tightens the belt wehn i press on the clutch pedal. Here is a picture of what i mean:

I just thought about it a bit and i think i have a solution for my problem now. The crankshaft is 7/8 inches in diameter and i cant get a centrifuigal clutch for it, thats a problem. I decidet to NOT run a centrifuigal clutch, imma buy 2 pulleys (made out of cast iron) and make a new setup. Both pulleys are gonna be a bit wider in diameter than the stock ones that i run rn, so i have more space for a clutch. The rest of the clutch is gonna built just like on a normal lawntractor. Imma use a trampoline spring that tightens the belt when i release the clutch pedal. The cool thing about the pulleys is, that i can get them with a 7/8 inch (22,223mm) hole and with a keyway slot, that makes this whole process easier

You actually could in fact run a 1" CVT because 7/8"-1" keyed shaft adapters are available on Amazon (here anyhow)!

Not sure if the shipping would be worthwhile but I have a blown up GC190 going to scrap if you want anything off it? If so PM me and we'll figure something out. Honda vertical shaft kart with peerless 700. 20230412Honda vertical shaft kart with peerless 700. 20230411

Hello @Brianator,
Thanks VERY much for the Offer, but i have enough parts for my Honda gcv 135, its running good, so i cant take them Crying or Very sad . Sadly shipping costs are also not cheap.... I just searched a bit on google and found a german website that sells Pulleys. They also sell one that fits on a 7/8 inch shaft. I bought 2 pulleys, 1 for the engine (133mm in diameter) and one for the gearbox input shaft (63mm in diameter). Thats a pretty big ratio i think, so i hope it works. The oulleys are for a 13mm belt, the old one was 10mm. The clutch is gonna be build just like on a racing mower. The gearing that goes from the Peerless 700 gearbox to the axle is: gearbox sprocket: 8 tooth, axle sprocket: 26 tooth. The gearing inside of the perless 700 gearbox (1 reverse, 1 neutral , 3 forward gears) is stock. With the old pulley ratio (1:1) it was pretty slow in 1st and 2nd gear so i think the new ratio is not too big. if it is too big, i at least have 2 pulleys laying around that i can use for my Mudmower (murray 11/36).
Have a great day!
