Disc brake on transaxle Empty
PostSubject: Disc brake on transaxle   Disc brake on transaxle Icon_minitimeJuly 2nd 2012, 2:12 pm

Does anyone have an idea for adding disc brake rotors to the axles on peerless style transaxles? I would like to upgrade my brakes, but have no idea how to mount a rotor to the axle. The rim hub covers all of the axle, and I was wondering if anyone has done a disc brake upgrade using a standard transaxle. I really don't want to convert to a R700 with a live axle if I don't have to.

Stretch did a kickass job of adding disc brakes to our machines. Check out the build thread.

I don't have the 820, Mine has the 3/4" axles, and the rim hub doesn't leave any room for adding a rotor hub.

I feel your pain. We ran on stock brakes forever before the upgrade... not much stopping power and they are gone after a short outing. I believe Stretch spent a decent amount of time trying to come up with something better for our old transmissions, and yet we still ran stock for about 15 years. Good luck.

I had considered that, but the keyway on the axle stops 2" short of the transaxle. I am trying to figure a way to mount the rotor to the hub on the rim. The issue is how to mount it and have enough clearance between rotor and tire for the caliper.

What about auto salvage yards - get one of those super thin discs off newer cars- and build a hub thatll fit - use the same car's calipers also - but look for a single resivior master cylender off an older car . Caliper can be mounted to the chassis .

Regular 3/4 rotors are out there.

You need a hat rotor... ____
....................................l.......l
..............................___l.......l___

Ignore the dotted lines, had to add them to keep the spacing.
Something like that. Where rotor mounts to the axle, inside of the rim, then is spaced out past the tire. Probably would be a custom fab job. You can cut off some of the rim's center hub length, to get some more room to mount the rotor.

I am wanting to do this as well.

I am running Peerless 205 transaxle with 3/4 axles.

The way I am planning to do it is buy a steel rotor made for 1 inch keyed axles. BMI has them in 6 inch, 8 inch or 10 inch OD. I am then going to make a bushing from steel on a lathe to adapt the rotor to my axle. It will be 3/4 ID and 1 inch OD. I then plan to weld the bushing and rotor together. That assembly will then be welded to my axle. I will not need to broach keyways into my adapter since it will be welded.

If you do not have the ability to make a bushing, OMB Warehouse has them for $2.75 each. I am sure other places have them as well. Maybe your local hardware store or trailer supply house??

My method will be very solid. If I trash my transaxle, I can swap the axle with the rotor welded to it into another Peerless 205. I have three spare transaxles that I have bought at a local scrap yard. (You want the ones that have a letter at the end of the model number like "C" or "D" since they have cut steel gears).

FEARLESS FRONT showed that swapping axles is possible in one of his recent videos where he bought a new transaxle and put his old axles in it since he had welded his wheel hubs to them.

My method would be cheaper than buying a rotor and adapter as spelled out above. THAT setup would costs approximately $40 plus shipping. My idea costs about $23 plus shipping.

Neither total includes the caliper since either way.....you have to buy a caliper.

Can anyone recommend a caliper??? I have seen them at BMI, OMB Warehouse, MFG Supply and many other places. I want a mecahnical caliper and a good one.

Hope this helps......

Regards, Brad

I ordered,

This,
http://www.bmikarts.com/Steel-Mini-Hub-w-1-Bore-_p_1404.html

And I'm getting an Unventilated car front brake disc or similar.

Another way is getting a drum brake 4" or 6" and weld it on a fitting bike disc suited for your needs.

This,

Welded to this,

Or similar.

You would need a keyway or splines or some other way of locking the rotation of the disk to the axle.
