84 murray mudding project

Just bought a 1984 murray with an 11 hp briggs and 36 inch cut. it sat for a while and mice built up a nest under the shroud and so i took that out and rebuilt the carb...she started right up. So we put a 4 and a half inch pulley on the front and 1 7/8 inch on the rear and in 3rd gear the rear pulley shredded right in half so i plan on doing it with a 9 inch on the front and 3 inch on the rear. Heres some pics from when i bought it...tell me what ya think i will get new pics after the cleanup tomorrow













i plan on doing a front and rear bumper, red led lights under the headlights and a bullnose ring between the headlights and bullhorns on the hood to look mean on the front lol

Ok got some updates from last night. Got a 2 1/2" pulley welded to my transaxle, and i welded the front end. Ill get some pics tonite and im going to start sanding after i get home (posting from my fone)

You... Welded it to the transaxle? Eh, whatever works I guess. What was wrong with the key and nut?

Have fun sanding if you are trying to take that paint off. We had one of those and sandpaper pretty much just polishes it. That is some super tough paint!

Yeah i weld pulleys because i deal with them one time and your done, alot easier in the long run, ive had 2 pulleys shear on me with no weld

Oh, most of the transaxles I own you have to remove the pulley to take them apart so I would never do that. Plus I use titanium keys so I've never had one shear.

I don't understand why you welded the pully but whatever work i guess.

Yeah im gonna lock it eventually, its a peerless 800 series so theres outside locks for it i heard.

Nice tractor, you have the same ammeter and same engine as me , apart from your engine looks in better condition than mine currently does.

Does anyone know how i can fix my steering? Its super wobbly after 15 mph and i already welded the front end

If you intend on going over 15mph I would go with a direct steering setup. Theres no way to get rid of slop in a mower.

I wouldn't go so far as to say there is NO way to remove slop from lawnmower steering. We have gotten ours pretty darn tight with simple mods and we are using stock craftsman steering box. I'm personally not a fan of direct steering for off-roading, as I think it is too sudden/twitchy, and gives serious feedback if you hit rocks and stuff.

Looks like my 80's agway - i had planned on off roading it but i went back to stock after i bot my GT murray ( way beefier).

Mine has a 3 speed peerless 600 under it - i had swapped pulleys to gain a lil more then 'geriatric ' speed, but switched it back - the pulley was a bit of a pain, mine has a half moon key holding the pulley on.

All my years of hot rodding around and going thru swamps - ive never broken a pulley key on either trans or motor, and i beat the crap out of them . I know on my agway if the pulley and half moon key wernt set right - it wouldnt mesh correctly.


About the steering, look for obvious worn pieces - in steering links, tie rod, front wheels and spindles - being that old im sure most of the steering is well worn.

I got old 18 hp twin need pulley swap junkstar builds sade 5 to 5 how bout 4 to 6

Went rompin in the snow last weekend...with the 4.5 inch pulley in front and 2.5 in the back i got a top speed of around 35 mph. Getting a welder this weekend so i will be doing the extended spindles, atv rack, locked tranny, ram bars etc.

Well i bought a welder last weekend...after a few practice welds i went to work. I welded the extended spindles on and put the big wheels on the front i also did a straight pipe out of 1" gas pipe. Heres a pic of it so far

Looks good.
Stack looks like it will hold up.

You'll probably want some support on that stack though, if you tip it over, it might break the block.

This. Just get some thin round stock or a bolt and weld it onto the hood, and off the front of the stack weld a bolt. Then bend a loop in the round stock off the hood, hook it over the bolt and tighten it with a nut.

Hey you guys if you got any ideas what else i should do then post em on here i need some ideas. Im gonna do front n rear ram bars tonite i think.

Two words.... Gas. Pedal.

You got a pretty nice start there.

I would put a gas pedel on it.
Also mabe leg guardes.

Looks great! This might be a weird question but what welder did you get? I'm looking to get one this weekend so I can get some of this stuff done I'm just not sure what to get.
