Hey Ya'll

I'm new here and I am in need of some help. I am wanting to build my HH100 up to put out some serious horsepower and torque (within reason) Here is what I want to do. Bore .020 over, Stroke, reseal, rering, cam up, and some head work. I can do the head work, I have new sleeves on the way, I can bore it, but I need some help with putting a stroker crank shaft in it. What I want to do is go as strong as I can without causing issues with the block. I am attempting to build the motor for a John Deere 112 demo tractor and I am in need of all the horse power I can get. Thanks fellas

Regular school or tech school? I might be able to talk my teacher into helping me out with the cad part of CNC ing the new part... Now there's an Idea but that would be a huge pain in the capitains quarters... dunno

I don't have any input on the performance mods themselves, but just a quick FYI:

If you crank out serious horsepower, you will need to also beef up everything down the line. You can break almost anything on a stock tractor with a stock motor. Once you start making the engine into a monster, you'll need a monster transaxle too.

I haven't broken into the transaxle yet but being its a 60's axle it should hold up shouldnt it? It looks so far to be pretty heavy duty. If not what mods will need to be done?

Not sure what can be done to a stock axle... my point was that we broke transaxle cases, broke axles, cracked frames, broke rims, etc. all with the horsepower generated from stock engines minus governor.  If stuff is breaking under stock horsepower, increasing the horsepower like you are describing will increase the stress on everything downstream and break more stuff, more often.

A good example is Stretch and I ran our tractors for years with 600 series peerless transaxles.  We broke cases and snapped axles as I said, but they lasted ok for the most part.  Once we graduated from running 10 - 14HP singles to running the current engines we use, 16 - 20HP twins, the transaxles pretty much started falling apart, and we had to upgrade to the 820 series peerless transaxles we are using now.

Now... that said... I'm not saying DON'T mod your engine to squeeze every last drop of power out of it you can.  I'm just saying, understand that the more power you have, the better built everything else has to be.

I completely understand that believe me. Where can one find a couple of peerless 820's? I might want to build a 4x4 with them. The nice thing about the mower I'm building right not is it wont see much off road use, as I am demoing it and everything is liable to break any way.

We get ours out of "side of the road" tractors, or Stretch has a tractor junkyard he knows of. They typically aren't free. My guess is you'll pay between $50 and $100 for a used one.

The transaxle you have in the 112 now is a peerless 2300. I had one in my John Deere 212 garden tractor. They're a very durable gear fluid filled transaxle. Also the pulley for the transaxle is mounted horizontally, you'll have a somewhat hard time swapping in an 820 which has a vertically mounted pulley and making it work

Getting back to the engine thing, do keep in mind that Tecumseh has now been defunct for a few years and parts are getting tougher to come by, especially performance goodies. If you can machine stuff, that's great. But you may actually be better off to start with something more common with better OEM and aftermarket support.

Yes The kohler k series (10-16hp) have more after market support and performance mods as they are used alot in the garden tractor puller world

The Kohler's are more popular, sure- but expensive from what I can gather. Maybe look into something a touch more common? You've got a horizontal shaft engine, right? May I suggest a Honda GX340 or one of the more popular clone brands like the Predator 420? Aftermarket support is good, and parts are relatively cheap and easy to come by.
