My dad was a Ferris dealer. I build my front ends out of Ferris solid front axles. They fit perfectly in AYP craftsman front ends. Just trim the ends down and make spindles for them. Super heavy duty

Haven't really been working on it since iam waiting on the belt.
However I have been thinking about future plans.

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20276

One of them includes this Walbro carb I found lying around in the shop.
I will more than likely just rebuild it and put an ec jet in.
Some light engine mods are taken into consideration but require some more thought.

Front suspension is also still a touchy subject.
I have the parts for the front worked out but not the suspension.
If possible ireally want a 4 link system but I don't have any idea on the geometry and what to order.
Maybe someone here will be willing to help me out?

Belt should arrive today.

Meanwhile things moved up the priority list.
I'll be opening the engine today and remove the camshaft and governor.

A customer of ours needs a second hand camshaft and I really want to get rid of the compression release so I call that a win win.

Also I decided to do away with the Walbro and whent for a nibbi that I found for sale on Amazon.
These are really good D slide clones
Mutant turtle - Page 2 Screen17

I only went with a 30mm as there was a special discount on those.
Looking at the Walbro it's 30mm aswell but really necked down at the Venturi so effectively more like 26.
In the end I don't need a huge carb just better throttle response.

Removed the governor and tapped the hole with a 9/16 fine thread.
Put it in with Loctite, rtv and a copper washer so if that'll ever leak I'll be surprised Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20283
And while we're at it I pulled the head as well to have it decked

Thanks

Meanwhile I went looking in our old stock and found a nos water pump manifold for kubota
So I'll cut it off at the red line and use that as an intake manifold together with a 90 degree hose

The holes on the head almost line up perfectly, just need to file it a little
I could also add the pcv hose if I want or block the secondary pipe

Also, starter...

About 40 bucks cash in hand alongside a customer's head

Full overhaul with chemical cleaning, valves lapped, decking and pressure test is about 200 for a 3 cyl diesel

Intake, looking very sharp.
I still have to take some paint off and polish it
Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20292
Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20291

Inside diameter is 30mm which lines up perfectly with the head and the carb is also 30mm so that is really nice.
The original manifold had about a 26mm id.

The Bolt holes I filed out and i had just barely had a smidge left but it worked out fine.

Iam also thinking about perhaps scrounging in the scrap pile if I can maybe find some other rockers from a Kawasaki Kohler or Briggs vanguard that I could make work

Iam an absolute menace with a cutting wheel.
I was modifying the pan for the hd starter and nicked the pan.

I could see a tiny pinprick whent trough so for now I put some JB weld on.
Next time I'll open it I'll have it fixed or put another pan

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20298

Supplier also dropped by so I asked him if he could get me 2 bolts for the hd starter
Going to guess that they are 5/16x4 inch but that's simply an educated guess as I have no access to Imperial bolts at work and neither Briggs or JD state a size

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Screen18

I have been going back and forth on the front suspension for a while but already decided to use Ferris spindles whatever happens.

Now another challenger entered the ring.
I have thought about ripping two of these arms off of a used machine and welding some Dom sleeves and bushings on.
That would basically get me 70% without too much effort.
The right side would basically move into the location where the front arm is now and the left would basically be somewhere where the engine is mounted.

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20299

And plumbed in the pcv, I actually have a really good catch can that came from my car but as I might use the port for a vacuum pump in the future I might as well leave it be for now

So I got lucky again.
When I ordered the belt i ordered it with priority shipping but it arrived a week late
Amazon however refunded me the full price and shipping.

So I ordered some nice things for 1 dollar

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Screen19

Especially love the form factor on the muffler. It's 2 inch od and 12 inch long
Also some exhaust wrap as iam going to stick weld it together and am most likely to cover up some crimes

Thanks, just taking a while since iam doing them at work during quiet minutes or after hours.

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20100

Parts guy came through, need to chase the threads before I tighten them up since these are a smidge longer than original.

The angle is a bit odd but it should fit, the starters that are listed on ec carburettors are also for vanguard and this is from a vanguard engine.

Sweet that looks like one of those high torque starters, are you thinking of adding an arc billet aluminum flywheel Ashwell?

Yes, this is a heavy duty starter.
They come standard on some John Deere gators.
With the compression release removed and the head milled I kind of have to use one or else it'll be a pain to start

Iam not replacing the flywheel as the shipping and import charges would simply be astronomical.
If I ever find a used one I might reconsider

Mutant turtle - Page 2 Img20101

The bolts were like a hair too long so I cut a bit off.
Also modified the cover already, haven't tested the starter yet but iam just going full send

that's Shure a good reason, the cost of shipping is absolute bonkers, looking forward to that full send for Shure!
