Can I Use A MY1016 Scooter Motor As A Generator?

I have this electric scooter motor and was wondering if I could use it as a generator to make power for my mower? I hooked it up to a computer fan and when its turning it powers the fan, faster it goes, the faster the fan goes.

So you basically want to use it as an alternator, run off the belt/ engine/ transaxle?

Might work, but most engines already have a stator (alternator).

yeah, i know, i don't think it produces enough amps to power the things i'm thinking about putting on it, it only does about 8 amps acording to the amp meter

Permanent magnet brushed DC motors can be used as generator ( different than an alternator) but you will still need a voltage regulator.

Alternators are AC current so a regulator and a rectifier are needed to convert to DC

Brushlees motors will not work

so how do i know if it is brushless?

so i've got another question, what kind of regulator would i need, its originally a 24v motor, rated for 2500 rpm, and 250 watts, model # my1016

A simple regulator of an old 60s Ford truck would work. It will have to be specifically setup for a generator. Not a lot of vehicles use generators after the mid 70's or so.

The reg in my 69 econoline was actually a separate adjustable unit.
