PostSubject: Snapper 4X4   Snapper 4X4 Icon_minitimeMay 24th 2010, 6:40 am

i have wanted to do this for a long . long . long time so i got a frame and am going to make it four wheel drive Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

uploading videos of my little 50cc mini quad and the snapper, i dont have an engine, but plan on building the frame first anyway the swapping the 11hp from my rally, just to see if it works and then get another for the rally....

first thing that is planned to happen is mount the gearbox that is on it sideways in the center of the frame, then run two drive shafts to two identical transaxles with BIG tyres.. this with a 5 speed thats on it in the middle will allow 5 + reverse gears on the move around, although the two transaxles will allow another 5 gears , making 25 forward gears and 5 reverse! allowing me to speed down my road OR going crawling offroad...

the only problem is the steering which i cant think of any help would be appreciated! im going to post pics a little later but i have posted a video of my snapper and quad; https://www.youtube.com/user/bigbleuboy

plz comment and subscribe!

here are some pictures

dis is ma snapper Twisted Evil
Snapper 4X4 Dsc02312

first thing i did when i got it home was take the deck off! i have no experience with this kind of thing so it took a while

Snapper 4X4 Dsc02313

the steering setup looks near identical to the AL-KO mudding tractor on here!

Snapper 4X4 Dsc02315

and finally one last one with the hood off

Snapper 4X4 Dsc02315

biggest problem i can see is between the steering and/or the identical transaxle's...

again i ask please can i get ideas for the steering! THANKS affraid

Hmm, steering is always the issue with these ideas! Only way I can see it to fab up the front axle with 2 Universal joints at each end. Could be tricky. As for drive, you can get a T drive unit for the rear. For the front though you'll want a differential, maybe something from a rear engine rider? Just go through ebay and see what you can find, that kidna stuff isnt too hard to get!
That 50 looks awesome too

My only question right now it, what transmission does the snapper have? Snappers were renowned for their friction disc drive set-ups. Not a bad set up, but not sure it would work for what you want. Can you see a proper transaxle on it?

im pretty sure its a peerless "sameasmyotherone" transaxle.

not sure what you mean cause i think that the diff on the front would mean that the front would be spinning at the same speed constant ally meaning that the it would scrape on the ground, dunno, i think ill explain my idea better...

turn a transaxle, locked, in the center turned sideways, then attach two drive shafts to either end then run them to two identical transaxle's allowing alot more gear variations, they would be fixed at an angle reducing stress on the drive shaft. the steering will most likely be the hard part but if i put two U pieces of metal onto the transaxle and run two "mini" driveshafts to the wheels.... better ideas welcome!

Only real issue i see is youd have to somehow make 3 shifter levers all acessable - or crawl underneath to change em.

To run a driveshaft to the front/rear transmissions, youd need to mount the transmissions straight up and down instead of horizontal .

Cool idea tho.

i would only make the center gear lever accesible and the other two would be crawl-time

i have realized that the transaxle one the snapper is toast, ill open it up at my uncles tonight or at the weekend although im not hopeful, i have made a request in the wanted section for 3 transaxle's, one with as many gears as possible for the centre and two that are identical ones for the axles front and rear.....

if you know anyone with such a thing then ill pay max £50 including shipping, but frees always good!!!!

What's wrong with the tranny? Could be rebuildable!

Looks for those on ebay, theyre tough axles and come up alll the time! SHame to see so many westwoods being parted out though! I have 4 of them, tough machines!

The shafts would have to be balanced otherwise they would spin themselves apart by being off centre etc.

Ive not got any spare axles sorry man. Otherwise I'd let you have one for shipping! Im really not sure how much you'll have to spend. Could be expensive. This might have to be a long term project if you wanna do it on the cheap, idk about you but I can never get freebies!

Yup! Exactly the same with me. My mates dad (hes a farmer, says it all really!) has an old westwood thats does work sitting in a barn, and wont sell it to me! Its just rotting away. The deck was savable first time I saw it, now theres not much left of it!

Farmers have that " i can always use that for something" attitude - i tried to get my dads cousin's husband to sell me one of the snowmobiles he's had sitting in his garage for over 10 years - he was like " nope" - theyd rather let them sit and rot away then sell them.
